Trip Report: Peacekeeper

Francis E. Warren AFB controlled these 55 properties--5 Launch Control Facilities (LCFs) and 50 Launch Facilities (LFs)--as one-fourth of its larger missile field. (The other 15 LCFs and 150 LFs are still in active service.) These sites were designated and assigned in 1963, and housed Minuteman I missiles for their first decade of use. By early 1975 the missiles had been replaced with the newer Minuteman III. During 1986-88 these facilities gained America's newest ICBM, the Peacekeeper. The Peacekeeper missiles were phased out from 2002-2005, and these facilities have sat empty since then. As of late 2013, elimination of the sites is underway.

I first visited the five Peacekeeper LCFs in 2010. It was a breakfast meeting with missile site researcher Jim Kirkpatrick that spurred me on to complete these visits while the sites were still reasonably intact. I modified my summer travel plans to finish the visits promptly. Just a reminder PIN means Permanent Installation Number and ILC means Installation Location Code; I include these for Air Force properties when I know them.

As I was wrapping up my visits, the Air Force released this Media Advisory discussing the elimination of the Peacekeeper silos. In one case, LF P-03, I caught an earth mover at the site with evidence of destruction visible inside the fence. Another Air Force News Feature explains the expended 5.56-mm blanks and M18 smoke grenades seen outside the fence of LF T-09. If you are a serious student of U.S. ICBM systems (a "siloholic" as some call it), consider joining the Association of Air Force Missileers.

Rumors of the LCF buildings being demolished led me back to the missile field in August 2016. I observed an intact Launch Control Support Buildings (LCSB) at P-01, Q-01, S-01, and T-01. However, the LCSB at R-01 had been removed and a thick concrete cap covered the elevator shaft area.

I returned in July 2021 to visit the Q-01 LCF in its new role as a Wyoming State Historic Site. This allowed me to tour the LCSB and the underground Launch Control Center (LCC).
