Trip Report: Odd Squad

Malmstrom AFB controlled these 55 properties--5 Launch Control Facilities (LCFs) and 50 Launch Facilities (LFs)--as one-fourth of its larger missile field. (The other 15 LCFs and 150 LFs are still in active service.) These sites were assigned in 1965, and housed Minuteman II (inspiring the nickname, "Deuce," for the system and the squadron) missiles for their first decade of use. In 1975 the missiles had been replaced with the newer Minuteman III. The 564 MS was inactivated in Aug 2008, and the sites sat empty for several years. As of June 2014, elimination of the sites was underway. The "Odd Squad" nickname has been used to describe the 564th Missile Squadron and its facilities for a couple of reasons. First, the facilities are physically different from the other three Malmstrom-based squadrons. The LCCs are the larger type built by Sylvania--the same as those at Grand Forks AFB--while the other three Malmstrom missile squadrons have the smaller Boeing-built LCCs as found at Ellsworth AFB, Francis E. Warren AFB, Minot AFB, and Whiteman AFB. This resulted in Malmstrom having two similar, yet structurally different, types of missile facility. Second, the numbering system of the 564 MS is different from the other three Malmstrom squadrons. The Odd Squad has five flights, like all other Minuteman squadrons, and in each flight the LCF is numbered as 00 with the ten LFs numbered 01 through 10, then 11 through 20, then 21 through 30, then 31 through 40, and finally 41 through 50 (like the squadrons at Grand Forks AFB). The other Malmstrom squadrons (and all the squadrons at Ellsworth AFB, Francis E. Warren AFB, Minot AFB, and Whiteman AFB) have LCFs numbered 01 with the LFs numbered 02 through 11.

I first photographed the five Odd Squad LCFs, and two of the LFs, in 2011. Then, in June 2014, I returned to the beautiful countryside north of Great Falls to document the 50 LFs, and take a few additional photos of the LCFs. Just a reminder PIN means Permanent Installation Number and ILC means Installation Location Code; I include these for Air Force properties when I know them.

As I was planning my 2014 visits, the Air Force released this news story about the silo elimination. If you are a serious student of U.S. ICBM systems (a "siloholic" as some call it), consider joining the Association of Air Force Missileers.
